Newcastle hires Steve Bruce as coach to replace Benitez

Jul 18, 2019

NEWCASTLE, England — Newcastle hired Steve Bruce to replace Rafael Benitez as its manager on Wednesday amid fan unrest at the lack of spending and ambition at the Premier League club under much-criticized owner Mike Ashley. Bruce, the former Manchester United defender, takes charge of his boyhood club after leaving his job at second-tier Sheffield Wednesday. He is the 10th permanent manager under Ashley's troubled ownership that began in 2007. It is being widely viewed as an uninspiring appointment, with the 58-year-old Bruce having been relegated twice from the Premier League — with Birmingham in 2006 and Hull in 2015....

Players hope World Cup successes turn into greater support

Jul 18, 2019

LYON, France — As the U.S. players celebrated their Women's World Cup title by dancing on the field, a chant rose from the crowd in Lyon: "Equal pay! Equal pay!" It was a fitting tribute after the team's monthlong march to a fourth overall title in the sport's premier tournament, where equity emerged as a main theme. The Americans were out front because of their lawsuit back home seeking to be paid as much as their counterparts on the men's national team. But it wasn't just about pay equity at this World Cup. Players hope the attention they've received in...

US wins 4th World Cup title, 2nd in a row, beats Dutch 2-0

Jul 18, 2019

LYON, France — After every goal celebration and all the confident posturing, the U.S. national team backed up its swagger at the Women's World Cup by winning it all. The Americans also took a swipe at gender inequity, too. The United States won its record fourth Women's World Cup title and second in a row, beating the Netherlands 2-0 Sunday night when Megan Rapinoe converted a tiebreaking penalty kick in the second half. Rose Lavelle added a goal to seal it. Afterward, Rapinoe looked out on the sea of reporters and said, "I've got a party to get to, y'all."...

Peru coach says his team is optimistic for the future

Jul 18, 2019

RIO DE JANEIRO — Coach Ricardo Gareca says his Peru team has reason to be optimistic about its future despite losing the Copa América final to host Brazil on Sunday. Gareca said after the 3-1 loss that Peru showed signs of improvement during the South American tournament. "The most important thing is to realize that we have improved over time," he said. "We are on the right track despite some setbacks, and we have to stay on this path." Gareca said Peru has enough talent to keep up with continental powerhouses Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay in the future. "We may...

Rapinoe fuses politics, pay and tech with World Cup win

Jul 18, 2019

LYON, France — A Women's World Cup stirred by heated debates on politics, pay and technology saw the narratives fused in Sunday's final by the undisputed and outspoken star of the tournament: Megan Rapinoe. By opening the scoring with a penalty awarded after a video review, Rapinoe claimed a sixth goal and — thanks to three assists and playing fewer minutes — finished as the Golden Boot winner of the most-watched FIFA women's tournament. Winning the top player prize provided the pink-haired captain renowned for her individuality and activism with a platform for both after the Americans completed their title...
