Omaha Personal Injury Lawyer Warns Nebraska: Study Shows Teen Drivers Pose Risks

October was Teen Driver Safety month, but the need to stress driving safety to teenagers doesn’t end there, a personal injury lawyer in Omaha, Matthew G. Miller, warns.

Omaha, United States - November 16, 2019 /PressCable/ —

Teen drivers are among some of the most dangerous on the streets, according to a recent study performed for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Surprisingly, however, teen drivers are reported to be statistically safer drivers than both Millennial and Generation X drivers. Given that 69.3 percent of teen drivers admitted to dangerous driving habits, according to the report, it remains critical for parents of teen drivers to continue to emphasize the importance of driving safely. “What most parents don’t realize is that teens start learning to drive long before they get their permits,” Matthew G. Miller, a personal injury lawyer in Omaha with Matthew G. Miller, PC, LLO says. “Children mimic the habits and actions of their parents. This statement holds true even in the car. If you wear a seat belt, they will too. If you look at your phone while you drive, they will do the same.”

Most insurance companies recommend that a parent monitor their teen’s driving for at least the first year after receiving their license. Make sure they adhere to best driving practices and retain everything they learned. “Something as simple as paying attention and understanding new traffic patterns can save a life,” remarks attorney Miller, who fights for car accident and truck accident victims in Omaha, Nebraska. “As new roads are built and road construction takes place in and around Omaha, roads that were once familiar become foreign again. It is something we as adults face, but most of us have decades of driving experience. Teens do not have that backlog of driving exposure to reference so they sometimes make rash decisions that lead to injuries.”

According to the study, teens have more weather-related crashes than any other age group. This is likely because they learned to drive in warmer seasons and have less experience driving in inclement weather conditions. The first time teen drivers encounter snow or ice, they may not know how to safely approach these treacherous conditions.

“Teens are typically cautious when they first start driving, which keeps them alert and less prone to automobile accidents. Parents need to be aware of their child’s habits once they have been driving on their own for about three months. This is typically when new drivers start feeling more comfortable on the road and begin to take risks, such as driving faster, and being distracted by their phones and other devices,” personal injury attorney Miller warns.
