TERESOPOLIS, Brazil — Neymar was back in training on Tuesday to give Brazil a big boost ahead of the World Cup. Neymar has been sidelined since February after having surgery on his right foot but spent an hour training on the main pitch at Brazil's Granja Comary training ground in Teresopolis, outside Rio de Janeiro. The Paris Saint-Germain striker was joined by Manchester City duo Gabriel Jesus and Danilo as he took part in drills, using his recovering foot to dribble cones and shoot from long and close range. Brazil goalkeeper Alisson anointed No. 1 for World Cup

May 23, 2018

TERESOPOLIS, Brazil — Brazil's goalkeeping coaches have no hesitation in anointing Alisson as the team's No. 1 for the World Cup, and are even comparing him to Germany's Manuel Neuer. Goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel, who played three World Cups for Brazil and won the trophy in 1994, said Alisson has developed "amazingly" at Roma this past season and deserves to start in Russia even though it will be he his first tournament. "Until recently we talked a lot about Neuer (as the best in the world). After the 2014 World Cup he showed there was a standard to be followed....

May 23, 2018

NAGRIG, Egypt — The cafe began to fill up more than two hours before kickoff. By the time the match began, some 200 men and boys — some as young as five — huddled around two large TV screens at a cafe Mohamed Salah frequents when he's back visiting his village deep in Egypt's Nile Delta. Salah didn't score, but almost everyone at the cafe let out a joyous scream and clapped enthusiastically at the final whistle: Liverpool, the English club for which Salah has scored more than 40 goals since he joined this season, has reached the final of...

Real Madrid downplays its Champions League experience

May 23, 2018

MADRID — Real Madrid is entering Saturday's Champions League final with the attitude that the past means nothing. According to coach Zinedine Zidane, the fact that the Spanish giants are two-time defending champions, playing in their third straight final and have a chance to win a fourth title in five seasons will be totally irrelevant when they take on Liverpool in Kiev. "We are prepared," Zidane said Tuesday. "But not because we have more experience. That doesn't mean anything. It's another game. We have to go out and show that we want to win it." Madrid is also the most...

May 23, 2018

ZURICH — Captains of the three countries set to play Peru at the World Cup have co-signed a letter urging FIFA to find a way for team captain Paolo Guerrero — currently banned for a doping offense — to play at next month's tournament. FIFPro, the global group of players' unions, released a letter Tuesday signed by France's Hugo Lloris, Denmark's Simon Kjaer and Australia's Mile Jedinak seeking a temporary lifting of Guerrero's suspension. Hours later, Guerrero met in Zurich with FIFA President Gianni Infantino — though it was unclear what soccer's governing body can do to change a ban...
