Manchester United ended yet another disappointing season in a disappointing fashion, losing 2-0 at Old Trafford to relegated Cardiff on Sunday

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United ended yet another Premier League season in disappointing fashion, losing 2-0 at home to already relegated Cardiff on Sunday.

While bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City fought for the title down to the wire, United slumped to its first league loss to Cardiff since 1960 in front of many empty seats as fans deserted Old Trafford before the final whistle.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing became the second player from a promoted team to score twice at Old Trafford in the Premier League after Louis Saha for Fulham in August 2001. Mendez-Laing opened the scoring from the penalty spot for his third goal of the season in the 23rd minute and made it 2-0 in the 54th from Josh Murphy's assist after being left unmarked by United defenders.

United finished the season in sixth place, failing to qualify for next season's Champions League. Since former manager Alex Ferguson quit in 2013, United has been unable to secure the Premier League title.
