Open enrollment begins on the 1st of November in most states including Nevada. Las Vegas based health insurance provider, Nevada Benefits, serves citizens of Nevada by helping small businesses and individuals find affordable health insurance.

Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as “Obamacare”, begins on November 1st and ends on December 15th, about half as much time as last year. There are many changes occurring within the Affordable Care Act this year, including the decrease in the open enrollment time, reduced funding for “navigators” (those who help applicants seeking health plans) and the possibility that subsidies for out-of-pocket expenses, known as cost-sharing reduction payments, will not be continued for lower-income citizens. For some, premiums may go up due to the anticipation of the loss of these subsidies.

During the open enrollment period, individuals who are enrolling must remember to sign up for health insurance during open enrollment (November 1-December 15) if they do not have health insurance coverage through their employer. During open enrollment, an individual can renew their current health plan for themselves or their family, make changes to their current health plan, or choose a completely new plan. If an individual does not sign up during open enrollment, they may have to wait a whole year to sign up. Penalties for not signing up for coverage in 2018 will be distributed to eligible individuals. However, if a person has suffered a hardship, he or she may not be required to sign up for coverage. There are four levels of coverage indicated by gold, silver, bronze, and platinum, and all plans must cover ten essential benefits including emergency care, hospitalization, pregnancy and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse services, prescription drugs, rehabilitation services and devices, lab tests, preventative and wellness services, and dental and vision care for children. Family size and income level will determine an individual or family’s eligibility for tax credits.
