Twins manager says team due for win over rival in postseason

GWANGJU — With his LG Twins having dropped seven straight games against the Kia Tigers in the regular season, manager Youm Kyoung-youb said Saturday they are determined to punch right back in the postseason. The Twins and the Tigers are facing off in the best-of-five first round in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason, starting Saturday at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in the southwestern city of Gwangju. The Tigers held off the Twins to grab the third seed and earn a bye to this round, while the Twins ended up in fourth place and had to beat the Doosan Bears in the wild card game Wednesday. Losing to the Tigers on the final day of the regular season Monday here in Gwangju sealed the Twins' fate. "We kept losing to Kia in some crucial games late in the season and it forced us to look at ourselves in the mirror and figure out what went wrong," Youm said in his pregame media availability. "I think it will help us in this postseason round." Youm predicted that stopping Tigers slugger Kim Do-yeong from doing much damage will go a long way toward helping the Twins. Kim led the reg

Tigers manager banking on top of lineup to do damage in KBO postseason game

GWANGJU — As the Kia Tigers open their Korean baseball postseason run Saturday at home, manager Lee Bum-ho said he will look to the top of his lineup to inflict damage on their opponent. The Tigers will host the LG Twins to begin the best-of-five first round in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in Gwangju, some 270 kilometers south of Seoul. Park Jae-hyun, one of the league's breakout stars this year with 19 homers and 21 steals, will bat leadoff, followed by the 2024 Korean Series MVP Kim Sun-bin. Then Kim Do-yeong, the 2024 regular-season MVP, will bat in his usual No. 3 spot, followed by Harold Castro and Na Sung-bum. Kim Do-yeong led the KBO with 45 homers in the regular season, while Castro and Na added 21 home runs and 31 home runs, respectively. "I think the game will come down to how well our first five batters will perform," Lee said in his pregame media availability. "Obviously, the bottom part of the lineup is also important, but our top guys will have to set the tone." Prior to this series, Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb said kee

Tigers manager marvels at All-Star slugger: 'He knows how to hit home runs'

GWANGJU — Kia Tigers manager Lee Bum-ho allowed himself to be a fan for a moment Saturday, when his MVP-winning slugger Kim Do-yeong hammered two home runs in the team's opening victory over the LG Twins in their Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason series. Kim drove in four runs as the Tigers prevailed 5-1 in Game 1 of the best-of-five series at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in the southwestern city of Gwangju. Kim's solo shot broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, and his two-run bomb extended the Tigers' lead to 5-1 in the bottom eighth. In between, Kim delivered a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. "What else can I say? He is incredible," Lee said of Kim, who led the KBO with 45 home runs in the regular season. "He knows how to hit home runs. I think this victory showed how Kim Do-yeong can singlehandedly change the complexion of a game. The first game in any postseason series is always important and I am quite satisfied with the way we performed today as a team." Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb, who had said before the series that keeping Kim in check was the ke

Slugger lives up to superstar billing with 2 homers in KBO postseason victory

GWANGJU — Entering his team's postseason series against the LG Twins, Kia Tigers third baseman Kim Do-yeong was hyped up as the key player to watch — by managers of both clubs. Twins skipper Youm Kyoung-youb said the key for his team would be to keep Kim in check and prevent him from inflicting damage. Tigers boss Lee Bum-ho said he was not worried about Kim because he trusted the 23-year-old star to what he was supposed to do. And Kim, the 2024 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular-season MVP who could win that award again this year, delivered on his promise Saturday by hitting two home runs and driving in four runs in his team's 5-1 victory in Game 1 of the best-of-five first round at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in the southwestern city of Gwangju. With the score knotted at 1-1, Kim announced his arrival in the series with a towering solo homer in the bottom fourth. Starter Anders Tolhurst threw him a first-pitch fastball that ended up near the heart of the plate, and Kim did not miss. His violent swing sent the ball 124 meters into the left-field stands, while also providing

American ace, homegrown veteran to duel in KBO postseason game

GWANGJU — The Kia Tigers will go for their second straight victory in their ongoing South Korean baseball postseason series with their American ace Adam Oller on the hill Sunday. Their opponent, the LG Twins, will counter with homegrown right-hander Im Chan-kyu. The Tigers took the first game of the best-of-five first round in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason by the score of 5-1 on Saturday, with starter James Naile tossing seven innings of one-run ball and slugger Kim Do-yeong delivering two home runs. Oller will now try to push the Twins to the brink. Oller finished second in the league with a 3.13 ERA and fourth with 180 strikeouts. This will be Oller's KBO postseason debut. Oller had a 2-1 record and a 2.40 ERA in five regular-season meetings against the Twins this year. He faced them more than any other opponent. He struck out 31 batters in 30 innings but also surrendered three home runs — one each to Austin Dean, Moon Bo-gyeong and Oh Ji-hwan. Im tied for the league lead with 15 wins but posted a 4.46 ERA, his worst mark since 2022. He had a 0-1 record and a 6.23

Tigers defeat Twins to open KBO postseason series

GWANGJU — Slugger Kim Do-yeong homered twice and drove in four runs, while starter James Naile tossed seven innings of one-run ball, as the Kia Tigers rallied past the LG Twins 5-1 to begin their South Korean baseball postseason series at home Saturday. Kim smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and then drove in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in Gwangju, some 270 kilometers south of Seoul. Kim then put an exclamation mark with a two-run home run in the eighth inning. Naile held the Twins to a run on four hits over seven effective innings in front of a sellout crowd of 18,000. Game 2 is 2 p.m. Sunday at the same Gwangju stadium. In the past 10 editions of the best-of-five first round, teams that claimed the first game went on to win the series nine times.
